History

Angkor Mikroheranhvatho (Kampuchea) Co. Ltd (AMK)'s origins can be traced back to the savings and credit component of Concern Worldwide's original community development work in Cambodia. From 1997 to 1999, these savings and credit activities were gradually separated from Concern’s broad spectrum community development program. Eventually, savings and credit became a separate project in its own right, albeit still administered by Concern.

In 1999, having grown significantly (with portfolio value surpassing KHR 1,000 million (US$250,000)) and facing changes in the regulatory environment, Concern began the multi-year process of creating a separate legal entity.

In 2001, the credit and savings project became known as Thaneakea Ponleu Thmey (TPT), an officially recognised Cambodian Microfinance Institution (MFI).

The bulk of the transformation process took place from 2002 to 2003, changing TPT into AMK Co. Ltd as it is known today. A new name, Angkor Mikroheranhvatho Kampuchea (AMK), was chosen and registered as a Limited Liability Company with the Ministry of Commerce. The physical separation of all assets and liabilities from Concern was subsequently completed.

Operationally, AMK redefined its focus, constituted and strengthened its Board of Directors, recruited new staff members, and began the task of upgrading systems and policies in line with the needs of a financial institution. In 2004, AMK obtained an MFI license from National Bank of Cambodia. In 2005, AMK secured its first debt financing and created a social performance management mechanism to gauge its social impact.

Since turning its first profit in 2005, AMK has matured into a large organization, expanded its geographic reach across Cambodia, and pioneered many innovative new products and services. Having weathered the global financial crisis of 2008, AMK now stands as one of the leading MFIs in Cambodia.

Vision, Mission, and Guiding Principles

Vision

The long term vision of AMK is of a Cambodian society where citizens have equal and sufficient economic and social opportunities to improve their standard of living, and where they can contribute productively towards the overall development of the country.

Mission

AMK’s mission is to help large numbers of poor people to improve their livelihood options through the delivery of appropriate and viable microfinance services.

Guiding Principles
AMK’s strategy is guided by the following key principles:

AMK will provide microfinance services to poor people in Cambodia that are grounded in sound financial discipline at all levels.
AMK will be committed to openness and transparency in all areas of management and operations.
AMK will be committed to developing processes and services, and to adopting behaviors and standards that ensure optimum social performance, including client protection.
AMK will be a learning organization where appropriate exchange and sharing of information will contribute to staff development, training, and to policy and systems improvements.

Operationally, this translates into the following Code of Practice for client protection:

Inclusion: We will maximize the inclusion of the poor and other marginalized populations with AMK products and services.
Transparent pricing: We will provide complete information to clients about policies and procedures, and ensure transparency in transactions and pricing.
Ethical staff behavior: We will ensure ethical and respectful behavior towards client s by staff.
Avoidance of over-indebtedness: AMK will limit client exposure to their capaciy to repay and will seek to avoid client over-indebtedness.
Freedom of choice: We will facilitate and promote freedom of choice to our clients.
Appropriate collection practices: Our debt collection practices will be reasonable and collaborative and will never be abusive or coercive.
Mechanisms for redress of grievances: We will provide clients with appropriate and accessible mechanisms for complaint and problem resolution.
Privacy of client data: The privacy of client data will be respected unless disclosure is required by law.

This code is translated into operating standards within AMK’s policies and is monitored through the internal audit function and social research findings.

Shareholders and Board of Directors

The shareholders of AMK are Concern Worldwide (Dublin) and Concern Worldwide UK.

AMK’s shareholders appoint the Board of Directors which is responsible for overall governance and strategic guidance of the institution. The ten-member Board has broad expertise in areas such as auditing, Cambodian law, management, financial systems, human resource development, microfinance, and extensive experience in commercial banking.

At present, AMK’s governance consists of 9 non-executive Directors in addition to the CEO, who is the management representative on the Board. There are also 4 committees that report to the Board. Each is composed of board members and external experts. These committees are:

Tanmay Chetan - Director, Board Chairman, Chairperson of Remuneration, Nomination, & Governance Committee
	Tanmay Chetan is a Co-Founder and a Managing Partner at Agora Microfinace Partners LLP. He is a microfinance professional with over 12 years of experience in various roles. His work in microfinance has included credit ratings, consulting, and implementation in over 15 countries. During 2003-7, he served as the first CEO of AMK Limited in Cambodia. Tanmay holds a Master's in Public Administration (Mason Fellow) from the Harvard Kennedy School and an MBA from the Indian Institute of Forest Management.
Howard Dalzell - Director, Chairperson of Social Performance Committee
	Howard recently retired from Concern Worldwide's Senior Management Team, having served as Overseas Director and Policy Director. He has over 30 years practical experience in development and humanitarian assistance. Howard holds a degree in Agricultural Science and a Masters in Animal Nutrition.
Rebecca McKenzie - Director, Member of Remuneration, Nomination, & Governance Committee
	Rebecca is a Co-Founder and Managing Partner at Agora Microfinance Partners LLP. She is a banker and capital markets expert with 12 years of experience. She was most recently employed at DEPFA Bank plc. where she was responsible for investor relations. She also acted as the bank's representative in its extensive sponsorship of and cooperation with Concern Worldwide. Rebecca has been involved with AMK since its inception and was nominated to the Board of AMK in 2008. Prior to DEPFA Bank, Rebecca worked in capital markets sales at UBS, Credit Suisse, and Paribas. Rebecca has a BA from Scripps College, California.
Tip Janvibol - Director
	Dr. Tip Janvibol is a managing partner of Tip & Partners. He has been licensed and authorized to practice law in Cambodia since 1995. He is a member of the Cambodian Bar Association, and has also served on the Governing Bar Council, an executive body overseeing the legal professional in Cambodia from 1999 to 2003. Dr. Tip has also served as a legal consultant and adviser to numerous projects for both national and international organizations, including the United Nations, World Bank, Asian Development Bank, as well as major corporations in Cambodia.
Pete Power - Director
	Pete brings several decades of management consulting, NGO, and private sector development experience to this role. Pete has led consulting practices at various organizations in the United States including Claritee Group, BearingPoint, KPMG Consulting, and Arthur Andersen Business Consulting. Pete has been a member of AMK’s Board of Directors since 2006. Pete holds a Bachelor of Science in International Relations and Philosophy, an MA in European Integration, and an MBA from Tulane University.
Kea Borann - Director and AMK's current CEO
	Borann is AMK's current CEO. He joined AMK as its Finance Manager in February 2004. Previously, Borann worked for World Relief Cambodia / CREDIT (Microcredit program) as the Finance Director. Borann holds a BBA in Finance and Accounting, and received ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) accreditation.
Marcus Fedder - Director, Chairperson of Risk Committee, & Member of Audit and Finance Committee
	Marcus is a banker with over two decades of experience. He previously held senior positions at The Toronto Dominion Bank, where he was the Head of Europe and Asia-Pacific, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), where he worked as Treasurer, the World Bank, the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) and Deutsche Bank. Marcus holds a PhD in Politics from Berlin and post graduate degrees in International Relations from LSE and Cambridge.
Irina Ignatieva - Director, Member of Social Performance Committee
	Irina is the Microfinance Advisor for Concern Worldwide. She has 15 years of experience with microfinance in developing countries. She has worked extensively with microfinance institutions in Central and Eastern Europe and Asia as a consultant and trainer. As a microfinance advisor in Concern, she now provides support to microfinance programs and programs with microfinance components in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. Irina holds an EMBA from Stockholm School of Economics, and an MA from St. Petersburg University, Russia.
Frances Sinha - Director, Member of Social Performance Committee
	Frances is the Executive Director of EDA Rural Systems based in Gurgaon India. She has over 25 years of experience in research and capacity building in Asian microfinance.
Adrian Graham - Director, Chairperson of Audit and Finance Committee & Member of Risk Committee
	Adrian is the Finance Director at UNICEF Australia. Previously, Adrian was the Finance Director of Concern Worldwide and the Concern Country Representative in Australia.
Olga Torres - Member of Social Performance Committee
	Olga is the Head of Research at Agora Microfinance Partners LLP. She has over 12 years of experience as a manager, consultant and researcher. From 2003 to 2009, Olga led AMK's work in conceptualizing and implementing systems for collecting and analyzing client data (including poverty levels) and on other aspects of social performance. Olga holds a PhD from Universidad Complutense (Spain) and a Masters of International Affairs from Columbia University (USA)
Helen Ianson - Member of Audit and Finance Committee
	Helen is the Country Director for Save the Children in Albaniahaving spent the past 15 years in the development sector in Asia and Africa. She has worked for leading International NGOs such as Concern Worldwide and Save the Children, including nearly 3 years based in Phnom Penh. Helen is also a UK qualifi ed Chartered Accountant and has worked in public practice in the UK as an auditor and also in the commercial sector in Europe.
Janardhan (Janu) Rao - Member of Social Performance Committee
	Janu is the Country Director for Concern Cambodia. He has over 24 years experience working in the NGO sector in rural development. Janu completed his Master's in Social Work in India in 1987 after which he spent several years working with indigenous NGOs in rural India. Janu began working with Concern in 2000 as the Assistant Country Director in South Sudan and then as Country Director in Eritrea and North Sudan before undertaking his current position in Cambodia.

	Kea Borann is AMK's Chief Executive Office. He joined AMK as its Finance Manager in February 2004. Previously, Borann worked for World Relief Cambodia / CREDIT (Microcredit program) as the Finance Director. Taing holds BBA in Accounting and Finance from National University of Management, MBA in Finance from Pannasastra University of Cambodia, and is now studying the ACCA program under Ministry of Economy and Finance Scholarship at CamEd Business School. Huot Sokha - Chief Business Officer
	Sokha joined AMK as Chief Business Officer in May 2012. He has more than 15 year experiences in international trading company, microfinance and banking industry. Previously, he worked for a Singaporean Company (MAYA Group), Microfinance Institution (AMRET), WING (ANZ Group) and CIMB Bank as Sales Manager, Marketing & Communications Manager, Business Relationship Manager and Head of Marketing & Product Development respectively. Sokha also worked as a consultant and researcher for some projects on microfinance product development and savings mobilization in Cambodian rural areas for Asian Development Bank and a microfinance project managed by “GRET/CEDAC”. Sokha earned a Bachelor of Management and Marketing at MVU University in 1997 and also received an MBA at Charts Stuart University of Australia in 2004. Long Chantha - Head of Treasury Department
	Chantha first joined AMK as Senior Inspections Officer in September 2005 and was promoted to the position of Inspections Manager in January 2007. She subsequently moved to the Treasury Department in October 2008. Before joining AMK, Chantha worked for the National Bank of Cambodia in the Bank Supervision Department. Chhun Chakrya - Head of Risk Department
	Chakrya joined AMK as Head of Risk and Compliance in March 2013. Before joining AMK, Chakrya previously worked as an assistant audit manager for KPMG Cambodia Ltd, an international audit firm, for more than 8 years from 2004 to 2013 with a wide experience in the auditing field on different industries. Chakrya holds Bachelor's Degree in Accounting from the National University of Management, Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from the Royal University of Phnom Penh, and Master Degree of Public Policy, majoring in Global Finance and Regional Development from KDI School of Public Policy and Management, Seoul, South Korea. 	Viriny joined AMK as Accountant and Administrator in February 2003. She was promoted to Accounting Manager in July 2008 and then to Head of Finance in January 2010. 	Chandraboth joined AMK in February 2004 as an IT Officer working to develop research applications. Lim, Seak Srun - Regional Manager
	Lim Seak Srun is responsible for the branches of Kampong Speu, Kampot, Preah Sihanouk, and Takeo. Seaksrun started working with the precursor to AMK (Concern-TPT program) in September 2002. He has over seven years of experience in microfinance with PRASAC Credit Association (an EU-supported microfinance program in Cambodia), where he was a district supervisor. Seaksrun is a Khmer national and holds a BBA in Finance and Banking from International Institute of Cambodia (IIC). Rith Sokha - Regional Manager
	Rith Sokha is responsible for the branches of Kampong Thom, Siem Reap, Preah Vihear, and Oddar Meanchey. Sokha started working in the microfinance sector as a Credit Officer within the Credit and Saving program of Concern Cambodia in Banteay Meanchey province from 1999 to 2002. From 2002 to 2005, she worked as an Area Manager in Banteay Meanchey. In 2006, she was promoted to Branch Manager for the AMK Pursat Branch. A year later, she was transferred back to Banteay Meanchey in the same position. In January 2010, she was promoted to a Regional Manager. AMK's Commitment to Cambodia's Development

AMK currently provides credit to over 250,000 customers in Cambodia. This represents over 2% of the total population and approximately 9% of the households in the country. The provision of credit to such a large number of people (who are located predominated in remote rural areas) makes AMK a key driver of financial inclusion in Cambodia.

In line with the National Bank of Cambodia’s policy to support Cambodian Riel (KHR) currency, AMK is also one of the key providers of KHR liquidity in Cambodia. Its current loan portfolio is denominated primarily in KHR, with over 95% of total portfolio denominated in KHR.

AMK’s commitment to the KHR is due primarily to client demand. In rural Cambodia, most clients transact in KHR and therefore require credit in KHR. Although the cost of KHR financing is significantly higher than USD, AMK remains committed to providing cost effective KHR credit to its customers.
